Elements of Renewal
Fig & Oak

‘Elements of Renewal‘ is a group exhibition centering works that breathe new life into raw forms. Conceived as a multi-sensory experience, the show transported viewers into a space filled with materials and sounds commemorating California’s landscape and atmospheric forces.

Collectively, the contributing artists seamlessly wove earth pigments, textiles, movement, and materials to frame ecological design. By reconceptualizing everyday materials and elements, the artists, in conjunction with the designs, created an atmosphere to commemorate the land and stimulate the senses.

Elements of Renewal is a proposition to deepen our connection with ecological landscapes, build conscious relationships with nature, and initiate intimate connections with the land that birthed its communities.

The exhibition was curated in collaboration with Fig & Oak.

Milford Graves - a visionary jazz drummer and interdisciplinary artist who seamlessly integrated holistic living and artistic expression into a unified life philosophy. He called his practice a “mind-body deal” - where the human heart, music, movement, medicine, herbalism, and visual art were all harmonics of the same energy.

Graves composed music using the heartbeat itself, turning biological rhythms into sound medicine. From that same heart source, he created his own martial art improvisation, built a community garden for collective nourishment, and hosted acupuncture sessions out of his homes in Queens, New York.

Barbara McCullough
Water Ritual #1: An Urban Rite of Purification
1979

Barbara McCullough’s experimental films center ritual, restoration, and renewal as sustenance for the spirit. A salient figure of the L.A. Rebellion, McCullough’s film and video projects offer a model of cinema that is both communal and devotional.

Made in collaboration with performer Yolanda Vidato, Water Ritual #1: An Urban Rite of Purification examines Black women’s ongoing tension and negotiation for spiritual and psychological space. Shopping Bag Spirits and Freeway Fetishes: Reflections on Ritual Space explores the ways in which artists across various media implement ritual into their practices. In this context, ritual reveals itself through the continuous utilization of objects, movements, words, or hums used to generate spiritual communication and cathartic experiences.
